چکیده

D-Sorbitol and dulcitol (galactitol), which, together with D-mannitol, are the three naturally occurring hexitols, have been known since the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Many fungi can utilize sorbitol for growth, but dulcitol is assimilated poorly by Aspergillus niger and a few yeasts. Among bacterial fermentations of these hexitols the best known are those by members of the Acetobacter group. These species will readily oxidize mannitol to fructose, sorbitol to sorbose, glycerol to dihydroxyacetone, and erythritol to L-erythrulose, but most of the organisms will not attack dulcitol. In a study of oxidation by Acetobacter suboxydans, King and Cheldelin (1952) found that the initial step of sorbitol oxidation (1 atom of oxygen) in resting cells was not affected by 4 X 10-4 M 2,4dinitrophenol, and thus they concluded that this step to sorbose was independent of the esterification of inorganic phosphate. Closely related to Acetobacter organisms are the pseudomonads studied by Sebek and Randles (1952). Only one strain of Pseudomonas fltorescens grew on sorbitol; none of the seven strains showed growth on dulcitol. As growth on the hexitols was adaptive, the nature of their oxidation products could be studied by the technique of "simultaneous adaptation" as well as by actual isolation. The former indicated fructose to be the product of sorbitol oxidation, while

D-Mannitol 1-phosphate dehydrogenase from Escherichia coli.

D-Mannitol is the most widely distributed of the naturally occurring hexahydric alcohols, and the compound has been known since the early part of the nineteenth century. It is found as a reserve material in some algae and many higher plan&. In some lower fungi it is the product of the fermentation of sugars. Finally, mannitol is utilized for growth and fermented by a large number of species of ...

Prevalence of virulence genes in Escherichia coli isolates of patients with UTI

Abstract Background and Objective: Urinary tract infection refers to the presence of microbial pathogens in the urinary tract and is one of the most common infections in outpatient and hospitalized patients. A wide variety of extra-intestinal infections in humans and animals are caused by the extracellular strains of Escherichia coli (EXPEC). Materials and methods:  A total of 50 E. coli iso...

Identification of GutQ from Escherichia coli as a D-arabinose 5-phosphate isomerase.

The glucitol operon (gutAEBDMRQ) of Escherichia coli encodes a phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotransferase system that metabolizes the hexitol D-glucitol (sorbitol). The functions for all but the last gene, gutQ, have been previously assigned. The high sequence similarity between GutQ and KdsD, a D-arabinose 5-phosphate isomerase (API) from the 3-deoxy-D-manno-octulosonate (KDO)-lipopolysaccha...

Regulation of hexitol catabolism in Streptococcus mutans.

Regulation of hexitol catabolism was investigated in Streptococcus mutans, a cariogenic human dental plaque bacterium. Induction of hexitol catabolic enzymes and phosphoenolpyruvate:hexitol phosphotransferase and hexitol phosphate dehydrogenase activities was regulated by an inducer exclusion mechanism initiated by D-glucose and 2-deoxy-D-glucose. Kinetic analysis of the inhibitory effect of 2-...
